As a result of Scar's death, Kovu was expected to one day avenge Scar by killing Simba and usurping the throne. As a cub, he was put through harsh training by Zira to prepare him for this task. Kovu is aggressive and crude, even as a cub. Upon first meeting Kiara, his first reaction is to snarl a challenge, and the only game he appears to understand is play-fighting.
His violent tendencies are reinforced by a knack for taking care of himself, as he is physically fit and an able hunter, two features that make way for his more arrogant and cocky side. Even as a cub, Kovu strives to please and takes no shame in showing off to the more innocent Kiara.
However, when faced by his mother, Kovu is submissive and prone to showing his softer side, exposing a desire to befriend and treat kindly the new cub he has just met. After meeting Kiara again as an adolescent, Kovu begins to cave to his inner good, proving himself to enjoy laughter and good times. Kovu is noted by many to bear a strong resemblance to Scar, though it is a coincidence as it is stated that was not his father. His fur is auburn, and his muzzle, paws, and underbelly are all creamy brown in color.
He sports a dark brown head tuft and also sports tufts of fur on his elbow joints that match the color of his head tuft and tail tip. His dark eye shades mirror those of his siblings, but his emerald green eyes match no member of his family's.
As an adolescent, Kovu's mane is colored a very rich dark brown and matches the dark shades of his elbow tufts and tail tip. He later gets a scar across his left eye identical to Scar's that is inflicted by Zira.
One day, Kovu escaped from his brother Nuka , who was supposed to be watching him. While wandering about, he met Kiara , Simba's daughter, who had wandered in the Outlands and bumped into him. The two cubs became friends after an incident with crocodiles, but they were quickly separated by their feuding parents.
Back home, Zira angrily scolds Kovu for trying to befriend an enemy but then realizes she may be able to use the friendship to allow Kovu to get close to Simba and kill him. She then praises Kovu for his brilliance, stating that he has the "same conniving mind" that Scar had.
When Kovu has grown into an adolescent, Zira sends him to the Pride Lands to initiate her plan. As part of the plan, he rescues Kiara from a wildfire that has been set by his siblings Nuka and Vitani. After rescuing Kiara, he asks Simba to allow him to join the Pride Landers and tells him that he can either judge him for who he is or to accuse him for a crime he didn't commit. Though Simba rejects him initially, it is pointed out that by law he owes Kovu a debt for saving Kiara through Zazu claims that Simba may want to make an exception in this case.
As repayment, Kovu is allowed to return to the Pride Lands; however, Simba still doesn't trust him. Simba chooses to reserve his final judgment until he can learn about Kovu's character and forces Kovu to sleep outside the den away from the pride, where Kiara thanks him for saving her life, to which Kovu comments that Kiara almost dies and also about her lack of hunting abilities and a provoked Kiara asks him to teach her to which Kovu agrees.
Kovu appears briefly in Simba's nightmare, where Scar turns into him and throws Simba off a cliff into the stampede similar to how Scar killed Mufasa in the first film. During his time at Pride Rock , he tries to attack Simba from behind, only to be unknowingly interrupted by Kiara, who reminds him about his earlier promise to teach her to hunt.
Mufasa foils their first attempt to kill Simba, so Scar calls up his troops and promises that when he is king the hyenas will "never go hungry again". With the help of the hyenas, Scar triggers a wildebeest stampede meant to kill both Simba and Mufasa.
Mufasa manages to save his son, but is badly injured in the process and tries to escape by climbing up the gorge. He spots Scar at the top of the cliff and calls for his aid. However instead of helping his brother, Scar grabs Mufasa's paws and sinks his claws into them, causing the latter to roar in pain.
Scar then leans over and smiles sinisterly at his horrified brother and says "Long Live The King". Then with a mighty shove, Scar flings Mufasa off the cliffside back into the stampede, where he is trampled to death. Scar then makes Simba believe that the young prince caused the stampede he had let out a loud yowl, while practicing roaring, seconds before the stampede began, and had not seen Scar throw his father to his death and in turn killed Mufasa.
Simba is guilty, and doesn't know what to do. Scar says "Run. Run away, and never return. Scar then orders the hyenas to chase the cub and kill him.
Unknown to Scar, however, the hyenas do not succeed because of a thorn bush, as Simba evades them and escapes into the desert. Scar then returns to Pride Rock and assumes the throne, letting the hyenas in the Pridelands and leading the pride to believe that both Mufasa and Simba died in the gorge. During Scar's reign, the kingdom rapidly declines as droughts hit and food becomes scarce. Years later, to Scar's surprise, Simba returns to challenge his uncle for the throne.
Scar forces Simba to reveal the "truth" about Mufasa's death and backs him towards the edge of Pride Rock's promontory, just as lightning sets the dry grass on fire and surrounds Pride Rock.
As Simba hangs off Pride Rock, Scar says that the situation looks familiar, before remembering that this is just the way Mufasa looked before he died. Scar then sinks his claws into Simba's paws and admits that he killed Mufasa, and prepares to kill Simba the same way he killed Mufasa before the rightful heir can tell anyone.
After flashing back to the day of Mufasa's death, an angry Simba leaps upon Scar and forces him to admit his guilt to the pride. A fierce battle ensues between Scar's hyenas and Simba's friends and family while Simba alone goes to fight Scar.
Eventually, Simba traps his uncle on Pride Rock's summit. Terrified, Scar pleads for his life, blaming his crimes on the hyenas; unaware that Shenzi, Banzai and Ed have followed him and can hear Scar's condemnation.
Simba, not willing to sink to Scar's level, spares his uncle's life and banishes him from the Pride Lands. Believing that Simba would pull the same trick on him, Scar begins to walk off, but then suddenly flings some burning embers into his nephew's eyes, temporarily blinding him. The battle continues, but after Scar leaps in to finish Simba, the younger lion finally defeats him by flipping Scar over the cliff where the hyenas are waiting. The hyenas, determined to get revenge on Scar for denouncing them as "the enemy", surround their fallen leader.
Scar, pleading for his life, tries to explain to the hyenas that he didn't really mean what he said about them, but his pleas fall upon deaf ears. Fueled with anger at Scar for his betrayal as well as, presumably, hunger, from his broken promise of them never going hungry again , the hyenas leap upon Scar and begin to maul him alive shortly before they are all surrounded by the blazing flames. Scar does not return as the villain in the direct-to-video sequel The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, but it is revealed that Scar had a group of lionesses loyal to him whom Simba exiled to the Outlands after he became king.
They are led by Zira who is still fiercely loyal to him their exact relationship is not clear, but implied to be romantic as in a deleted scene Zira claimed to be Scar's queen who has three offspring: Nuka and Vitani , and, Kovu. In the film, Zira attempts to use Kovu, who was selected to be Scar's heir, to kill Simba and become king. Kovu, however, is not Scar's son, as he later explains to Kiara. Scar only appears twice, the first time in Simba's nightmare. In the nightmare, Mufasa clings to the cliff above the stampede as in the first film, and Simba tries to reach down to help his father.
However, Scar appears on the ledge and grabs Simba's paw, preventing him from reaching Mufasa. Scar laughs, suggesting Simba trust him and let Mufasa fall. Mufasa falls into the stampede and the cackling Scar morphs into Kovu. Kovu flashes an evil grin and throws Simba into the stampede, as Scar had done to Mufasa in the first film. He appears again when Simba banishes Kovu from the Pride Lands.
